Palomar Observatory dome with its shutter open,at night. This dome at the Palomar Observatory in California,USA,houses the Hale telescope,a reflector telescope named after the astronomer George Ellery Hale when it was completed in 1948. At about five metres (200 inches),it was the world's largest mirror telescope until the 6 metre Russian BTA-6 telescope was built in 1975. Many important advances in astronomy took place here, such as the first observation of a brown dwarf star and the first optical spectrum obtained from a quasar. The dome sits at an elevation of 1867 metres within the Palomar mountain range | |
