Eclipse expedition. Watercolour of a solar telescope being used on 22 January 1898 during an expedition to Sahdol,India,to observe the total solar eclipse that took place that day. Solar telescopes require a long focal length (here the diagonal shaft). Light from the mirrors (upper left) travelled down the shaft to the darkened hut (lower right) where the magnified image of the Sun was studied. The expedition was organised by the Royal Society and the Royal Astronomical Society, and included the Astronomer Royal William Christie (1845-1922) and the Oxford professor of astronomy Herbert H. Turner (1861-1930). The RGW monogram (lower right) is that of Robert Gossett Woodthorpe (1844-May 1898),amateur artist,Royal Engineer and Deputy Surveyor-General at Calcutta | |
