Foetus. Ultrasound scan of a healthy 12-week-old (3-month-old) human foetus in the uterus. Its large head (centre) accounts for a large proportion of its crown-rump (sitting) length. Its torso is at lower left. At this age the foetus has a crown-rump length of about 8 centimetres and a weight of around 45 grams. In ultrasound scanning,high-frequency sound waves are transmitted into the body. An image is formed from waves that are reflected back off internal structures. Ultrasound enables the foetus to be accurately aged, thereby giving an estimated date of delivery. Ultrasound is also used to make sure that the foetus is developing normally | |
