Lymph node. Coloured light micrograph of a section through a lymph node. Lymph nodes are kidney shaped encapsulated structures that are usually located at intervals along lymph vessels. The lymph follicles (circular, dark purple) are structures inside the node that filter pathogens from the lymph fluid while producing and storing B lymphocyte cells and T lymphocyte cells. B and T cells are white blood cells that are involved in the immune system. A labyrinth of cells and cell processes in the inner medullary sinuses (white and purple, centre right) serves to slow the flow of fluid through the node and encourage the actions of these B and T cells against the pathogens.
