Skeletal muscle. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of skeletal muscle fibres that have been freeze-fractured along their lengths. Muscle fibres are bundles of long, cylindrical threads called myofibrils. These are divided into sections at regular intervals, with the junctions between sections creating vertical lines,as seen along the fibres. This gives the fibres a banded appearance, and skeletal muscle is also called striated muscle due to this. The surrounding material is the endomysial connective tissue,a sheath surrounding the muscle. Skeletal muscle (also called voluntary muscle) is found in places like the arms and legs. Magnification: x200 when printed 10cm wide | |
