Striated skeletal muscle. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of fibres of skeletal (striated) muscle. Elongated muscle fibres (red) are seen. Fine striated bands run across the surface of these fibres. Cross-striations are the arrangement of proteins (actin and myosin) which cause the fibres to contract. Remnants of connective tissue fibres (yellow) are scattered on the muscle. Striated skeletal muscle is also called voluntary muscle. It provides intentional or conscious movements of the body: of the head, trunk, limbs, and organs like the eye and tongue. Magnification: x220 at 6x7 cm size. x286 at 4x5ins | |
