Base of the brain, historical anatomical artwork. The front of the brain is at top. The origin of the 12 cranial nerves is shown. These are nerves that go directly from the brain to body systems,as opposed to the spinal nerves that branch off the spinal cord. These nerves and the brainstem (lower centre) are white. The rest of the brain is yellow (cerebellum at bottom; cerebrum making up rest of visible surface). The elongated nerves at upper centre are part of the olfactory nerve (the first cranial nerve). At centre is the optic nerve (the second cranial nerve). The other nerves are at lower centre. Artwork from The Nerves of the Human Body (Ed. Jones Quain,London,1839) | |
