MODEL RELEASED. Monitoring a patient's heart rate. Surgeon taking a patient's pulse during surgery by placing a finger over a pulse point on their temple in front of the ear. This pulse point is known as the temporal pulse, where the superficial temporal artery throbs in response to heart beats. The pulse is measured by counting the number of times the artery throbs per minute. This corresponds with the number of heart beats per minute. Abnormally high or low rates can indicate problems during the surgery. The tube taped to the patient's mouth is connected to a respirator to assist with their breathing.
