Chest organs. Post-mortem of the mediastinum organs (centre), the central volume of the chest, and lungs (left and right, dark pink). The mediastinum consists of loose connective tissue that contains all the viscera found in the chest (including the heart, lower centre) except for the lungs. The lungs are used to oxygenate the blood and remove carbon dioxide from the blood. Post-mortem examinations, also known as autopsies, are carried out to identify a cause of death, and to assess the health of a dead person's organs. | |
