If left on the tooth this material will quickly be colonised by bacteria and turned into a sticky deposit called plaque,which is more difficult to remove. The bacteria in plaque digest carbohydrates from food,producing as a waste product an acid that dissolves calcium minerals in the tooth. This eventually produces a hole that exposes pain receptors in the tooth's sensitive interior. Tooth decay can be prevented by regular brushing and flossing,and can be remedied by fillings.
