Reaction to TB vaccine. Close-up of a severe but normal skin reaction 8 weeks after injection with a BCG vaccination against tuberculosis. The BCG vaccine is injected into the upper arm and produces a small pustule about 6 weeks later. This heals completely to leave a small scar, although an occasional complication is a chronic ulcer that fails to heal. The vaccine is prepared from an artificially weakened strain of bovine tubercle bacilli - the bacteria that cause tuberculosis in cattle. BCG (bacille Calmette-Guerin) is named after the two French scientists who developed the vaccine in 1906. It is usually given to children aged 12 to 13 | |
