MODEL RELEASED. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Mother and child suffering carbon monoxide poisoning, are observed by Dr Maurice Cross in a pressure chamber. They are undergoing hyperbaric (high- pressure) therapy, breathing pure oxygen through masks. The treatment lasts about two hours. Pressure in the chamber is 2.2 to 2.4 times atmospheric pressure, allowing rapid oxygen uptake in the blood and body tissues. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, although controversial, may be used to treat cases of gas poisoning, diabetic ulcers, burns etc, which require high oxygen levels to speed healing.
