MODEL RELEASED. Cochlea implant. Two-year-old boy with a newly fitted cochlea implant. A microphone around the ear detects sounds from the environment, which travel through a processor (not shown) to a transmitter (left) that is magnetically attaced to a receiver under the scalp. This unit converts the sounds to electric impulses, which are detected by electrodes running from the receiver to deep within the cochlea. This allows the impulses to reach the brain. This implant is suitable for profoundly deaf patients who are not helped by conventional hearing aids. This implant gives the patient an awareness of sounds and speech, and helps the patient to lip-read | |
