MODEL RELEASED. Cochlear implant test. Audiologist makes noises under cover of his hand, while Gemma Heath (aged ten) responds to the sounds by placing a ball on a frame. Gemma has a cochlear implant (CI) in her ear for her deafness. Now,after the surgery, the implant has been switched on and will be tuned. The CI surgical procedure is performed on profoundly deaf patients unable to be helped by conventional hearing aids. Electrodes from the implant are inserted into the cochlear of the inner ear, enabling sound impulses to reach the brain. Externally a transmitter and microphone are seen, and a sound processor is worn. The CI gives an awareness of sounds that assists lip-reading | |
