Prosthetic hip. Components of a prosthetic hip joint, removed due to loosening. On the left is the metal shaft encased in the cement which fixed it to the inside of the femur. On the right is the plastic socket. Prosthetic hip joints are used to replace diseased hip joints that have become stiff and painful as a result of arthritis. The operation is usually very successful in relieving pain and increasing movement. However the bond between bone and metal tends to loosen after a time due to stress or infection. A second prosthesis may be required with a larger femoral component to fit tightly into the thigh bone | |
