Cochlear implant surgery. Surgeon burrs a hollow behind the ear in the skull of a deaf patient to insert the receiver of a cochlear implant (CI). Attached to the receiver is an electrode array that is inserted deep into the cochlear of the inner ear,enabling sound impulses to reach the brain. After 4-6 weeks rehabilitation the patient is ready to wear externally a transmitter,microphone and a sound processor box which detect sounds.
