Blood group test. Contents of a blood group test to enable people to determine their blood group at home. Blood is collected by pricking the finger with a haemolance (yellow/white). A drop of blood is placed on each circle of a test card (bottom right). Blood group (ABO) is determined by the presence or absence of certain inherited substances (antigens) on the surface of red blood cells. The Rhesus (Rh) gene also codes for an antigen on the surface of red blood cells. A results chart (bottom left) shows the possible blood group and Rhesus combinations. If the incorrect blood group is used during a transfusion it can prove fatal | |
