MODEL RELEASED. PET scanner. Nurse prepares a patient who is about to pass into a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner. The patient is on a trolley which will slide into the PET scanner's cavity. PET scanners are used to investigate the metabolic and chemical activity of organs in the body, usually the brain, tumour sites or the heart after a cardiac arrest. A radioactive tracer (usually radiolabelled glucose) is injected into the patient's bloodstream, which is then absorbed by active tissues. The PET scanner detects photons emitted by the tracer and produces "slice" images. Photographed at Siemens Research in Princeton,New Jersey,USA | |
