Sleeping sickness blood smear. Light micrograph of the blood of a patient suffering from sleeping sickness. The disease is caused by the presence of trypanosomes (Trypanosoma sp.,purple) in the blood. Red blood cells (pink) are also seen. Trypanosomes are protozoa that are carried in the saliva of the tsetse fly. When the fly bites, the trypanosomes enter the victim's bloodstream. They spread to the nervous system, causing lethargy, tremors and confusion, and eventually coma and death. The disease can be treated with antiprotozoal drugs.
