Patient infected with rabies. This patient is suffering from convulsions and has been restrained in a hospital bed. Rabies (hydrophobia) belongs to the rhabdovirus group of viruses. It is usually transmitted to humans through dog bites. The virus spreads to the brain and also to tissues such as the salivary glands. Symptoms of fever, salivation and throat spasms appear after an incubation period which can last up to a year. Alongside this, there may be behaviourial changes such as confusion, agitation and anxiety. After this even the sight of water may cause convulsions and paralysis. Rabies is always fatal unless the patient receives a vaccination immediately after exposure to the virus | |
