MODEL RELEASED. Leg oedema (fluid accumulation) in an eight-year-old boy with nephrotic syndrome. This type of oedema is called pitting oedema, where pressing on it will form a small pit (centre). Oedema is one of the symptoms of nephrotic syndrome,a disorder that occurs when the kidneys have been damaged and begin to leak protein from the blood into the urine (proteinuria). In children, nephrotic syndrome is often associated with minimal change disease (lipoid nephrosis). This is a children's kidney disease that is usually caused by food allergens, medications or blood cancers, but can arise spontaneously with no known cause. It can be treated by prescribing medications such as corticosteroids and statins | |
