Atherosclerosis. Coloured Scanning Electron Micro- graph (SEM) of a cross-section through a human coronary artery of the heart showing athero- sclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a build-up of fatty plaques on the walls of arteries. Here the twisted artery wall is brown with inner lumen blue. Fatty plaque is yellow. Some 75% of the artery width is blocked. Blockage is partly due to plaque, and to a hyperplastic reaction of cells on the artery wall which have multiplied. Atherosclerosis leads to irregular bloodflow and clot formation, which can block the coronary artery resulting in heart attack. Magnification: x33 at 5x7cm size. x46 at 4x5ins | |
