Hairy-cell leukaemia. False-colour transmission electron micrograph of abnormal B-lymphocytes isolated from the blood of a person suffering from hairy-cell leukaemia (HCL). The lymphocytes are covered with characteristic hair-like cytoplasmic projections. Leukaemia is a malignant disease in which the bone marrow & other blood-forming organs overproduce certain types of white blood cells. These immature or abnormal cells suppress the normal production of white and red cells, thereby increasing the sufferer's susceptibility to infection. Hairy-cell leukaemia is a rare form of leukaemia, most commonly occurring in young men. Magnification: x3100 at 6x4.5cm size | |
