Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. Light micrograph of a bone marrow film from a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). White blood cells (lymphocytes) are stained purple. In leukaemia the bone marrow and other blood-forming organs overproduce certain types of white blood cells; in CLL these cells are usually B lymphocytes, occasionally T lymphocytes. Several neutrophils are present showing multi-lobed nuclei. A cell is completing division in the lower left quadrant. Immature and abnormal cells which are overproduced suppress the normal production of white and red cells, increasing susceptibility to infection. Magnification: x630 at 35mm size | |
