False-colour scanning electron micrograph of white blood cells from a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). In most cases the white cells are B lymphocytes, but in a minority they are thought to be T lymphocytes. Surface features of CLL cells are moderate to marked microvilli as seen here. Leukaemia is a malignant disease in which the bone marrow and other blood- forming organs overproduce certain types of white blood cells. These immature & abnormal cells suppress the normal production of white & red cells, increasing the susceptibility to other infections. Magnification: x1000 at 35mm size | |
