Basal cell carcinoma. First of two images. Close-up of a basal bell carcinoma (or rodent ulcer) on the temple of a 92 year-old female patient. The carcinoma is seen with a typical rolled edge and central scabbed area. Basal cell carcinomas are the most common form of skin cancer among fair-skinned people, mostly affecting the elderly. They usually appear on the face and are thought to be caused by ultra-violet radiation in sunlight. Although they slowly destroy the surrounding tissue, they seldom spread to other parts of the body. Treatments include surgery, cryosurgery or radiotherapy. See M131/283 for image of rodent ulcer after radiotherapy treatment | |
