Basal cell carcinoma. This is a type of skin cancer also known as a rodent ulcer, which commonly occurs on the face or neck and typically affects fair-skinned people. Direct skin damage from the ultraviolet radiation in sunlight is thought to be the cause in most cases. They usually appear as small, flat nodules and grow slowly, eventually breaking down at the centre to form a shallow ulcer. If untreated they invade deeper tissues but luckily never spread to other parts of the body. They may be removed by cryosurgery or radiotherapy or with a surgical operation. The treatment often results in a complete cure | |
