Breast cancer. Artwork of a section through a cancerous breast. The tumour is the light blue mass towards the bottom of the breast. Fat deposits (yellow) and milk-secreating glands (pink) are also seen. This is an infiltrating,or invasive, carcinoma, the tumour has moved from the tissue of origin into surrounding tissue. The most common form of breast cancer is infiltrating ductal carcinoma, which arises in the milk ducts. Cells from the tumour may spread to other parts of the body (metastasis) via the blood or lymph vessels. It is usually detected before it gets to this advanced stage. Treatment is with surgery, often combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy | |
