Chronic bronchitis. Illustration of sputum collecting in the airways of a human lung affected by chronic bronchitis. The lobed structures are bunches of alveoli, the tiny air sacs where oxygen is absorbed into the blood. Chronic bronchitis is a common condition in which sputum,a yellow-green fluid,is coughed up regularly over a number of years. The sputum is produced by mucus-secreting cells in lung's airways when inflamed by infection or irritation. The disease also causes narrowing of airways in the lungs, and is associated with smoking. There is no cure for chronic bronchitis, which often shows an inexorable progression with increasing shortness of breath | |
