This patient has AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome),and the gastritis was caused by an opportunistic cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. The gastritis has caused inflammation and ulceration here,which causes similar symptoms to a gastric ulcer. These include pain in the upper abdomen,nausea and vomiting. CMV infections are extremely common,but are usually only serious in patients with weakened immune systems.
