MODEL RELEASED. Acne vulgaris on the forehead of a 15-year-old girl. Acne is a general name given to a skin disorder in which the sebaceous glands of the skin become inflamed. This is the most common form, beginning in adolescence when the sebaceous glands become overactive. The pustules (large red spots) seen here are caused by the blockage of hair follicles by plugs of dried sebum. The top of the sebum plug may turn black, forming so-called blackheads. Acne vulgaris occurs on the face, chest and back, and is most common in young men. Its mild form disappears in adulthood; more persistent, chronic acne can result in infected cysts and scarring of the skin | |
