Acne vulgaris scars. Close-up of old scars from the skin disorder acne vulgaris seen on the skin of a 30 year-old man. Acne is a chronic disorder caused by inflammation of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands in the skin. Acne vulgaris, the most common acne, occurs during adolescence. Pustules (large red spots) develop where hair follicles become blocked with sebum secreted by the sebaceous glands. The top of the sebum plug turns black, forming a blackhead. Acne vulgaris occurs on the face, chest and back. Mild forms will disappear in adulthood; more persistent and chronic acne results in infected cysts, and a scarring of the skin | |
