Alzheimer's disease. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of an axial section through the brain of a patient suffering from Alzheimer's disease. The condition is also known as senile dementia. At top is the front of the brain. Here,at the level of the temporal lobes, the cerebrum of the brain is seen (dark blue) with central light areas forming inner ventricles. Due to Alzheimer's,however, the ventricle cavities are substantially enlarged due to death of brain cells. Destruction of brain tissue is also seen on the outer surface with deep abnormal folding and brain shrinkage. The cause of Alzheimer's is not known. It leads to memory loss, disorientation, dementia and death | |
