Acne vulgaris. View of the upper back and shoulders of a young man with the skin disorder of acne vulgaris. Acne is a general term describing skin spots formed when sebaceous glands become overactive and inflamed. Acne vulgaris is the most common acne, occurring typically during adolescence. Pustules (large red spots) develop where hair follicles become blocked with sebum secreted by the sebaceous glands. The top of the sebum plug turns black, forming a blackhead. Acne vulgaris occurs on the face, chest and back. Its mild form disappears in adulthood; more persistent and chronic acne results in infected cysts, and a scarring of the skin | |
