Alzheimer's disease. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of a patient's brain affected by Alzheimer's disease. This is a progressive condition in which nerve cells degenerate and the brain substance shrinks. The green area at top centre shows the region with low-density brain matter. The cause of Alzheimer's disease is unknown, although it may be linked to a genetic condition. The disease starts with increasing forgetfulness which deteriorates into a phase of severe memory losses. In the final stage the patient becomes severely disoriented and confused. Nursing and social care for the sufferers is the most important aspect of treatment | |
