Barnes Neville Wallis (born 26th September 1887,died 30th October 1979),aviation designer and engineer,photographed working in the study of his home in Guilford in 1977. Wallis' contribution to the emergence of the aircraft industry was huge. In late 1924 he began the design of the ill-fated R.100 airship,and in the pre-war years worked on design of the Wellesley and Wellington Bombers. His best-remembered achievement was the development of the "bouncing bombs",used to breach the Mohne & Eder Dams in Germany on 17th May,1943.
