Jonas Salk (1914-1995),American microbiologist and doctor. Salk is best known for developing the Salk vaccine,or inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV),in 1952. The vaccine consists of an injected dose of inactivated (dead) poliovirus, resulting in immunity to the live disease. This vaccine contributed to the eradication of polio,a once widely-feared disease. Salk also founded the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in California,USA,and devoted many of his later years towards developing an HIV vaccine. Photographed in 1955 | |
