Edward Mills Purcell. Portrait of the US physicist Edward Mills Purcell (1912-1997). Purcell received his doctorate in physics from Harvard University in 1938. He worked on microwave radar during World War II,at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was appointed a professor at Harvard from 1949,working in the new field of NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) absorption. He received the 1952 Nobel Prize for Physics (jointly with Felix Bloch) for developing precision methods for measuring nuclear magnetism.
