Mendel museum exhibit. 19th century teaching tool, illustrating botanical specimens, from the Mendel museum commemorating the Austrian botanist Gregor Johann Mendel (1822-1884),founder of genetics. The museum (Mendelianum) is housed in the Abbey of Saint Thomas,Brno,Czech Republic. Mendel was a former abbot of the Abbey. He conducted his breeding experiments with pea plants here, and so discovered the statistical laws of heredity. From his results,he postulated a unit of heredity that is now called the gene.
