Mendel's barometer with a chart of meteorological data. The Austrian botanist Gregor Johann Mendel (1822-1884),founding father of genetics, was the sixth abbot of the Abbey of Saint Thomas,Brno,Czech Republic. The Abbey houses a collection of Mendel relics (the Mendelianum). Mendel conducted his breeding experiments with pea plants here, discovering the statistical laws of heredity. From his results,he postulated the existence of a unit of heredity that is now called the gene. He was known in his lifetime for his meteorological work. His classic work on heredity was not recognised until 16 years after his death. A new exhibition,The Genius of Genetics, opened here in May 2002 | |
