| Louis Lumiere (1864-1948),French pioneer of cinematography. Louis and his brother Auguste were the first cinematographers to screen popular motion pictures. They combined technical expertise (such as Edison's perforated film and claw movement) with real artistic flair to produce a number of impressive works. On 13 February 1895 they obtained a patent for their "cinematographe",a combined camera and projector that operated at 16 frames a second.
