Ada Lovelace (born 1816). Portrait of the 27-year- old Lady Ada Lovelace,daughter of poet Lord Byron and friend of inventor Charles Babbage (1792-1871),who designed the first computer. Lady Lovelace was a supporter of Babbage's "analytical engine" - a mechanical computer made of cogs and levers which was never finished. As well as publi- cizing Babbage's ideas,and thus preserving his name for posterity,her mathematical flair enabled her to design programs to run on the machine.
