Aaron Klug. British molecular biologist Sir Aaron Klug (born 1926) holds a model of a zinc finger molecule. It is a protein containing zinc which he discovered can switch genes off. Klug points to those parts of the molecule which bind to DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid). He and colleagues at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology,Cambridge, have engineered a protein made up of three zinc fingers that blocks a gene which causes leukaemia. Leukaemia is a blood cancer in which white blood cells multiply out of control. The new zinc finger complex may thus be used as a gene therapy. Klug won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1982 for work on biological molecules. Photographed in 1995 | |
