Sir Aaron Klug (born 1926),Nobel Prize-winning British molecular biologist and President of the Royal Society (from November 1995),with a model of a zinc finger molecule. Klug's work on the structure of large biological molecules won him the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1982. In 1985 he discovered zinc fingers, proteins that bind to DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) to switch particular genes on or off. He is currently Director of the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, where he and his team in 1994 con- structed a zinc finger complex that can switch off a gene that causes leukaemia.
