Friedrich Engels (1820-1895),German philosopher who supported and popularized Marxist philosophy. Engels was sent to England as a young man to help manage his father's cotton factory in Manchester. Engels was shocked by the poverty he saw. In 1844,he met Karl Marx who was living in France at the time. The two formed a life- long friendship. Marx and Engels developed their ideas on communism,and published the Communist Manifesto (1848). Over the next decades,Marx lived with his family in London and Engels worked in Germany to give him financial support.
