Fingerprint scanning. Computer graphic of a fingerprint scan with coloured markings showing the positions of characteristic features. The scan was obtained from a finger placed on an infrared scanner. The computer then locates all the features on the image that together make the fingerprint unique. Each feature's position is calculated from a central point on the tip of the finger and this information is also stored on the image. Future finger scans can be compared with the features on the original image to provide an identity check, protecting access to bank accounts for example.
