Laboratory mice. Litter of nine newborn mice (only eight seen). They were born on 13 March 2004 from embryos that had been frozen at the eight-cell stage. They are a strain of mice known as 22a,which is used for mating with mutant strains of mice during experiments to understand mouse genetics. Scientists are able to determine the function of genes by observing the effects of gene mutations.
