Grape vine DNA research. Rack of vials containing the DNA from Sardinian vines, extracted from samples of Grenache (Vitis sp.),a grape variety grown primarily for the production of red wine. The DNA was analysed to help determine the geographical origin of the vines. Genetic analyses from more than 500 sites revealed that vines do not only have one single origin,as was thought, but several origins around the circumference of the Mediterranean Basin. A cutting of the vine (top right) and an autoradiogram (bottom left) can also be seen | |
