Plastic production research. Microbiologist using a laboratory fermenter to produce acrylic acid from glycerol found in vegetable oil. Acrylic acid,which is normally produced from the gas proylene,a by-product of oil refining,is used to produce plastics and adhesives. Producing acrylic acid from glycerol could provide a source of plastics even if oil supplies ran out. This research was performed for the United States Department of Agriculture
