MODEL RELEASED. Proteomics researcher holding a two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) gel. He is studying proteins from Caenorhabditis elegans,a soil-dwelling nematode worm widely used in biological research. An electric field and a pH gradient are set up at right angles to each other in the gel, separating proteins by their mass and charge respectively. Each dot in the gel is a different protein, which will be removed from the gel for further study. Studying the structure and function of an organism's proteins (proteomics) improves understanding of how it works. This work is being done at Aberystwyth University,Wales,UK | |
